Three men were talking about life in general when one asked the others, “When you encounter a flame, whose hand would you take if you can only take one? And where would you take them?

The pair thought about the question for what seemed an eternity when in reality it was only a minute or two.

One of the men spoke, “If I were to encounter the flame from a huge fire,” he paused to look at his friend beside him, “I would take my friend’s hand and take him to safety.”

The man who asked the question nodded in acknowledgment.

The second man spoke, “If I were to encounter an inferno I would have to take my only son’s hand and lead him to safety.”

Very good my friends, very good. He turned to leave and one of the men stopped him by asking, “Whose hand would you take hold of if you encountered a flame? And where would you take them?”

“Ah, that’s easy,” he replied. “I’d get my son to blow out the candle on his birthday cake and then I’d take him by the hand to enjoy the rest of his birthday party.”
